Bekwai Sports complex nears completion

Bekwai, (Ash), April 15, GNA - The Asante Bekwai Traditional Council has appealed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to help complete the Gyamfi Sports Complex at Bekwai.

The community has already through its own resources completed the fencing, fixed the gates and constructed the playing field. Nana Kaakari Appau II, the Omanhene who made the appeal at an annual Easter fund-raising durbar at Asante Bekwai, said the outstanding works included grassing, construction of stands and an inner perimeter. The Complex formerly served as a football league centre but has over the years been left to deteriorate.

The Omanhene said it was his hope that both the Municipal Assembly and the Ministry would collaborate with the Community to undertake the remaining job to ensure its completion.

The facility, he said, would immensely help to unearth sports talents and enhance sports development among the youth in the area. Nana Appau used the occasion to express concern about the rampant power cuts in the Municipality and urged the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to move quickly to fix the problem. Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of Youth and Sports, who was the guest of honour, praised the community for the initiative and gave the assurance that the Ministry would support its completion. Mr Joe Osei-Owusu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Bekwai, announced that construction work on a new modern District Hospital with an accident centre would soon begin at Bekwai. 15 April 09
