Being disloyal to Al Ahly has cost me a lot – Felix Aboagye laments

Former Ghana striker Felix Aboagye has lamented that but for his disloyalty, he would have been held highly by former club Al Ahly.

Aboagye represented the Egyptian and African powerhouse from 1993-1998 and had a very successful time there.

He scored over 40 goals in over 100 appearances as he helped the Red Devils win consecutive premier league titles as well as an Egyptian cup during his time there.

He was revered within Ahly’s high ranks and fans hailed him as one of the best foreign players to grace Africa’s greatest ever football club.

However, Aboagye has revealed that his legendary status suffered a massive dent, the moment he signed for Ahly’s bitterest rivals Zamalek in 2001.

The 44 year old still blames himself for failing to do proper checks before aggreeing to sign for the White Knights.

“I didn’t do proper research, I should have done my checks and rejected that offer (from Zamalek)” he told Asempa FM.

Aboagye says his move to Zamalek angered a lot of Al Ahly fans, especially the ultras.

He acknowledges that this has affected his relationship with the club, meaning he has missed out on the opportunity to serve in an ambassadorial role or in any other capacity.

“Because of that (move to Zamalek), most Al Ahly fans are angry at me, because they feel that switch, dealt my club legendary status a big blow”.

“They had wanted to set up a youth development center here in Ghana for me, but the Ahly hardcore fans opposed it and it was eventually scrapped”.

“So till date, that (move to Zamalek) has really affected me. Though they rate me as one the best foreign players ever to have played for Al Ahly, if not because of that, I would still have been benefitting from the club”.

Felix Aboagye wants to use his experience to caution young players to do proper checks about clubs they seek to join.

“Its a lesson, if you are moving to a club, you must research about them, its part of the game”, he noted
