Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz has left his role as head coach of the Black Stars following the team’s poor performances in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on October 1, 2026.

According to reports, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the coach reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract, bringing their partnership to an end.

Details regarding the specific agreement on compensation and other financial obligations are yet to be disclosed to the public.

7 Games, 4 losses, 1 Win: Carlos Queiroz’s difficult tenure with the Black Stars

The decision on who will take over as head coach on an interim basis is yet to be announced, as the football association works to make a decision as soon as possible.

The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d'Ivoire in their first game and went on to suffer a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In Group C, Côte d'Ivoire and The Gambia lead with six points each, while Ghana and Somalia lie at the bottom with zero points after two games.

This puts the team’s chances of qualification under serious threat, as they have to win against Somalia in a double-header before taking on the other two opponents, who have taken a significant lead.
