Asamoah and Otoo steal SWAG show

The 38th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards lived up to expectations when Italy based Black Stars midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah was named the Sports Personality of the Year.

Patrons and guests on the night stood up to cheer and pay respect for the nation’s best sports personality and ambassador who was also voted the Footballer of the Year, 2012. He went home with quality products donated by MTN, Hisense, ATL, Promasidor and ERKE Sports Wear.

One sports personality who also received a standing ovation and perhaps the largest cheers was the top scorer in the 2012 /13 Glo Premiership, Mahatma Otoo of Accra Hearts of Oak who was crowned best player on the local scene.

His total of 20 League goals helped Hearts of climb up the table to plce fifth and also record the highest goals scored by a club in the season. The Hearts Ladies (clad in the rainbow colours) led by Vicentia Deku came to the State House to support their hero as he climbed the stage to receive his rewards.

Otoo told yours truly his focus is on the Black Stars and wants the opportunity to score goals to land Ghana into Brazil 2014.

“I think am ripe enough to play for the Black Stars and I believe I will score in my first game. I just want the coach to try me and Ghanaians will be very happy. My wish is that Ghana qualifies for Brazil and I pray to be part of the team” he said. Otoo’s brace against Medeama on Republic Day enabled Hearts to lift the 2013 President’s Cup. Meanwhile, Hearts’ Coach David Duncan has described Mahatma Otoo as the best striker in the country who needs much international exposure to sharpen his skills.
