Aquinas Quansah elected President of the Ghana Swimming Association

Hon. Aquinas Quansah, MP for Mfantsiman West, has been elected President of the Ghana Swimming Association for a four–year term of office. This took place at the Association’s First ever Delegates Congress which was held at the Media Center, Ohene Djan Sports Stadium on Friday 28th May, 2010. Before his unopposed election to the current high office, Hon. Aquinas held the fort as Chairman of the Greater Accra Swimming Association.

The Congress which saw the Association adopting a Constitution was organized in accordance with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) requirements for Sporting Associations. Congress delegates were drawn from stakeholders across the country.

The Vice President position was contested by Theophilus Wilson Edzie (GBC Band Manager) representing the Volta Region and Charles Mensah. After Balloting was down, Charles Mensah stepped down for Mr. Edzie to take up the Vice Presidency.

Mr. Cyril Yelibora who also contested with Mrs. Helena Williams (University of Ghana) for the position of Treasurer stepped down on his own volition. The other two Executive Member positions went unopposed for Hon. Kojo Adu-Asare (MP for Adenta) and Richard Nii Ahene Koomson whiles Williams Kyei occupied the Secretary-General Position.

The newly elected Executive Council was sworn into office by the Chief Admin. Officer of the National Sports Council, Mr. Enoch Hornsby-Odoi.

The Executive Council later co-opted the following officers to the Board; Yaw Adu (KNUST, Ashanti Region), Kweku Sam-Brew (Akosombo International School, Eastern Region), Eric Kornor (Vice Chairman, Gt Accra), Mrs. Marguerita Accad (Tesano Sports Club), Kojo Abbiw Jackson (Tesano Sports Club). The Board also appointed Kwami Kpodo and Mike Vuvor as Members of the Technical Committee with Kojo Abbiw Jackson as the Head and Legal Advisor.

Hon. Aquinas Quansah in his acceptance remarks expressed optimism in the current board and pledged total commitment to rapidly develop swimming to achieve excellence both in Ghana and international.

The Chief Executive Officer of National Sports Council, Mr. Wolanyo Agra expressed his bliss for a successful congress and charged the board to hone the colossal budding talents in swimming to achieve laurels.
