Andre Ayew to captain Ghana ahead of Nations Cup double-header

Andre Ayew Andre Ayew

Andre Ayew will captain Ghana’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and Togo if Asamoah Gyan fails to recover in time for the double-header, an Accra-based radio station Happy FM has reported.

The Marseille star, who is second-command, will take over the leadership role of the team ahead of the trip to Kampala.

Substantive captain Asamoah Gyan will be invited for the qualifiers but remains unclear if he will be fit enough to play in the game.

If the Al Ain goal-machine fails to make the line-up due to injury, the mantle will fall on the second son of Ghana legend Abedi Pele.

Ayew’s leadership qualities has never been doubted after he captained the country’s Under-20 team to clinch the World Youth Championship in Egypt in 2009.

The Black Stars will be aiming for a win in Kampala on November 15 ahead of the final group game against the Hawks of Togo in Tamale four days later.
