Africa Armwrestling Championship bows to coronavirus

The 2020 Africa Armwrestling Championship which was slated for Ghana in July has been suspended indefinitely amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The five-day competition was slated for Accra, capital of the West African country, for the second time between July 1 and July 5.

Ghana was offered the chance to host the championship again after the rights were taken from South Africa due to administrative lapses in the organisation of the competition.

The continent's armwrestling authority and the host country have agreed to postpone this year's competition as the world continues to fight the spread of the deadly contagious novel virus.

"The Executive Board of AFA in a joint decision with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) and the good people of Ghana through the Honourable Minister of sports resolved to postponed the African Championship, Accra Ghana 2020 indefinitely,"

"AFA is equally hopeful for speedy solution to the challenges posed by COVID-19 so that we all can take advantage of the extended period to adequately prepare our contingent for a glorious outing in the African Armwrestling Championship."

In a related development, the Ghana Armwrestling League which was also scheduled to commence last month has also been postponed indefinitely.

The developments come as a big blow to Ghana where the sports has been growing rapidly following the country's successful hosting of the 2018 Africa Armwrestling championship which was likened to a mini World Championship by patrons from the World.
