Adeyinka and Kiadu jointly win 2017 President Chess Cup

Adesina Adeyinka from Nigeria with registration number 2198 and Charles Haji Kiadu from Liberia with registration number 1820 both scored six points to win the 2017 Ghana Chess Presidents Cup tournament played at the Media Center of the Accra Sports Stadium over the weekend.

They shared the winner’s package of $2,000 cash and took home a trophy plus medals. The ultimate winner took home $750, second had $600, third got $300, fourth collected $200, and the fifth had $100.

The Best Lady Player took home $100, and the Best Junior Player had $50. All the participants were satisfied with the tournament regulations and the results. 46 players took part in the three day tournament which was sponsored by by Kasperov Chess Foundation.

Third place was taken by Soyoye Abel with registration number 1996 and five and half points also from Nigeria with Degondo Simplice Armel on registration number 2167 and five and a half points taking the fourth position.

Ghana’s Anquandoh Francis Eric with registration number 1949 was fifth with five points.

The participants are drawn from Ghana and other African countries like Liberia, Nigeria, Togo, Cote d’Voire and Indian residents in Ghana.

Group captain George Arkoh Dadzie, President of the Ghana Chess Association said he was happy with the turn out and urged the youth of Ghana who do not play football nor swim to take to chess as it is another sporting discipline that sharpens the brains.

He commended the youth who took part and advised them to bring their friends and families around to play chess.



He said the tournament was played along the rules and regulations of the World Chess Federation and praised the Kasparov Chess Foundation for sponsoring the championship ultimate prize money.

He tasked the sporting media to publicize all sports events including chess as they have been organizing events and competitions.

He thanked the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President for his vision and mission to lift Ghana Sports to a better and higher level.



“I wish to commend all the chess players who made this tournament a success, and the GOC President for granting our association 4,000ghc which we have used to pay our affiliation fees and cleared some debts. We appeal for more corporate support” he added.

Ms. Christie Ashie, Secretary General of the Ghana Chess Association (GCA) who took part in the competition said the Ghana Education Service (GES) and educational institutions must embrace the sport of chess and participate fully in their events.

She noted that chess is not an elite sport as everybody can play.
