Accra stadium grass dying

The turf of the Accra stadium is growing brown rather than its usual green colour, by the day, as a result of shortage of water that has hit some parts of the capital.

The irregular pattern of natural rainfall has complicated the situation leaving the National Sports Authority (NSA) with limited options.

For now, the Authority is at the mercy of commercial water tankers, which according to the PR outfit, is very expensive.

Issaka Hamid, PRO for the Authority, said falling on the Weija Dam near Kasoa will be the last resort due to the salty nature of the water.

There are indications that the situation will compel the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to relocate the Ghana Sudan World Cup qualifier in March from Accra to Kumasi.

Frank Boahen, CEO of Green Grass Technology (GGT), the company tasked for the upkeep of the pitch, said in a telephone interview “it is a general water problem, the Sports Authority are putting measures in place to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

“They have asked me to take a temporal break. I believe they are in talks with the Ghana Water Company. It would be solved soon”.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that corrosion on the metal stands of the Stadium keeps deteriorating.

Last year, the deterioration necessitated a collaborative inspection of the facility by the Ministry, the Authority and the media led by the construction experts to find a solution to the problem.

However, the facility has been left unattended to since then.
