Accra Polo Club Defeats BA Team

The Accra Polo Club this weekend thrashed their British Airways counterparts 6-2 as part of the club's centenary celebration at the Accra Polo grounds. Proceeds of the match will be donated to the Anfaani Children's Home, an orphanage in the Northern Region.

In the first chukker, the skillful Ghanaians beat the BA team 3 goals to nil. Accra Polo Club came back rejuvenated in the second chukker which ended 5-1. British Airways after a long struggle managed to make their score two.

The Accra Polo Club perhaps with their 100 years' experience floored the BA team in the third and fourth chukkers and lifted the trophy.

At the end of the spectacular event which was watched by dignitaries including the British High Commissioner, Dr. Rod Pullen and his wife, the wife of the Minister of Information and Presidential Affairs, Mrs. Esther Obetsebi-Lamptey and the Commissioner of CHRAJ, Mr. Francis Emile Short, the score line was 6-2.

All the players received a neatly carved trophy and a British Airways diary and a framed picture of the BA concord.

Accra Polo Club carried the day with a silver trophy. British Airways, Golden Tulip and La Beach Hotels were the major sponsors of the games. For the past five years proceeds of the British Airways cup have been donated to selected charities.

The team of players from the UK included a concorde pilot, Peter Benn, a pilot of the 757-767 fleet, David Wildridge and the Public Relations Manager for Africa, Lucinda De Laroque. Speaking to Mailsports, Mr. David Wildridge said polo is one of the sports that BA wants to develop in the country because other sports like football have major sponsorships. He thanked Ghanaians for their hospitality.
