Accam excited to end goal drought in Major League Soccer

Philadelphia Union attacker David Accam has shared his relief after scoring his first goal of the season on Thursday.

Having drawn blank since completing a move to the club in February, the winger emerged hero of the day as he netted a last-gasp goal to ensure a 4-3 away victory for Union over former side Chicago Fire.

Also with a hand in another goal, the Ghanaian was named Man of the Match.

“I think every last-minute winner is amazing,” Accam said, as reported by his club's official website.

“It was also my first goal this season.

"For me, I’ve worked really hard and I think this goal will rank high in my career.

“I needed this to get going. For me, I’m so happy to get this.”

Accam's woes with Union were so bad that the one-time MLS king, who won successive Fire's Most Valuable Player and Top Scorer awards in two of the last three seasons, lost his place in the club's starting XI.

Indeed, he came on as a substitute in Thursday's game.

“David did a lot of good things good even in the first 10 games of the year when he started; he just wasn’t on the scoresheet,” Union head coach Jim Curtin remarked.

“For him to get a goal was huge. I hope it’s a big boost for his confidence.

"This is a big way to break out and I’m really happy for him.

"He stuck with things, worked hard in training to get back on the field and now puts in a performance where he gets the winner.”

Accam will be hoping to continue his exploits against LA Galaxy next week when MLS returns.
