The much anticipated clash involving 37 Army Officers Mess Tennis Club (AMTEC) and Kumasi-based 4th Garrison Tennis Club came off last weekend with the homesters winning six out of 7 games.

AMTEC white-washed the visitors who could only manage a game of the total of seven before the event was rained off.

Samson Sayibu of AMTEC set the tone by defeating Samuel Aidoo 7-4 before Doe Adjani added another win for the homesters after he defeated Baba Zakari 7-4 while Edward Addo increased the lead for AMTEC by thumping Kwaku Amankwa 7-3.

In the battle of captains, 4th Garrison’s Jonathan Quartey put smiles on the faces of the away team after he claimed 7-2 victory over Felix Kabutey .

However, Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) president Isaac Aboagye Duah (Abe) added more wounds to the 4th Garrison Club as he thrashed Samuel Taylor 7:1 while George Asabia followed the home team’s winning ways after beating Nii Kwei 7:3. Major Nuku then beat Michael Akonia 7-5.

The doubles events were called off due to heavy down pour.

Speaking at the event, chairman of AMTEC, his Lordship Edward Asante said: “I am happy with the proceedings and excellent comportment of both clubs.This is the first time 4th Garrison had suffered a convincing defeat and we are excited about it”

For his part, president of 4 Garrison, S.S. Abebe promised to get to the drawing board and restrategise for revenge when the two sides meet again in Kumasi next year.

The tournament was watched by lots of tennis fans which included AMTEC patrons, Brig General Albert Adu, Mr Charles Addoquaye, Brig General Salifu Yakubu, Mr Johnny Amegayigbor and Mr Gabriel Agah.
