Gianni Merlo, President of AIPS, who announced the initiative when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Information, Mr. Fritz Baffour on Friday in Accra, said the idea presents an opportunity for young journalists to have an experience of international competitions.

He said the Young Reporters’ Programme, which is open to journalists within the ages of 18-25 will have a participant from each of the 16 countries qualified for the final tournament scheduled from 22 September to 13 October in Azerbaijan.

The AIPS President recalled that a similar programme was organized on the sidelines of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Games held in Shenzhen, China last year drawing over 30 participants.

The Information Minister highlighted the significance of sports as a tool for national development.

Also in town for the event are Mitchell Obi (Nigeria) and Evelyn Watta (Kenya), both members of the Executive Committee of AIPS.
