AAG: 'Fat' bonus for Ghanaian medallist

Accra, July 19, GNA - The Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (MoESS) has made available fat bonus to the Ghanaian athletes at the 9th All African Games underway in Algiers, Algeria.

The Deputy Minister of the Ministry, Osei Bonsu Amoah told the GNA Sports that gold medallists will enjoy five thousand dollars each in the package which is aimed at encouraging excellence.

Silver and bronze medallists, according to the Deputy Minister are taking home three and two thousand dollars respectively. Ghana's disabled athlete, Ajara Mohammed became the first deserving recipient of the 5000 dollar bonus when she claimed the first gold at the event last week.

Ajara beat a strong field of eight finalists to claim gold in the 1,500 T54 competition.

The Paralympics team has become the biggest winners so far after sweeping a massive nine medal hauls to lift Ghana onto the medal table. The package which is unprecedented in the history of the country's sports cuts across all the participating disciplines at the Games. Mr Amoah said teams and individuals who reach the final of each event are entitled to an extra five hundred dollars. The Deputy Minister described the package as one aimed at motivating the country's athletes in their quest to promote sports in Ghana. Gold medallists at the last Olympic Games picked home a whooping 10 thousand dollars.
