Kumasi Searches For Ghana's Most Beautiful

Of a total of 22 confident ladies who appeared before the pre-selection committee of the Miss Malaika Ghana organisation, 12 of them were eventually selected to contest in the Kumasi preliminaries last Saturday night at a private event at the plush Miklin Hotel. The 12 delegates, drawn mainly from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, and Kumasi Polytechnic, strutted down 'the Red Catwalk' in the quest to be crowned with the coveted title of the 'Most Beautiful Girl in Ghana', and represent the country at Miss Malaika International, the pan-African beauty pageant in South Africa this December.

Meeting all of the organiser's criteria, which seeks an elegant woman, eloquent with good public speaking ability and a good command of the English language, the lady must also be intelligent and knowledgeable about general issues, and have a beautiful face and figure with a proportionate overall body size. Height is of no consequence for this event.

Answering questions from four Judges, including Kwame Sefa-Kayi, a radio broadcaster, Mrs. Theresa Ayoade, event director of Charter House, Mr. Klaus Vonbackunstein, sales manager of Joy FM and Ms. Juno Abena Turkson, arts writer, the ladies appeared first to introduce themselves to the select audience in the hall who also had score cards.

Their vote will count for 40% of the total. Serving as an ambassador for Ghana and Africa, the lady crowned Miss Malaika Ghana will, apart from representing Ghana at the international pageant in South Africa come December, also receive among other prizes, C20 million personal cash, the use of a Kia Sephia official car with comprehensive insurance from Phoenix Insurance, a Sony Vega entertainment system, and one year attachment with Ghana AIDS Commission as AIDS Ambassador.

A production of Charter House, Miss Malaika Ghana 2003 is produced courtesy of Rana Motors, Sony Centre, Phoenix Insurance, Trasaco Valley, Volta Hotel, Aunty Lizzy Wig Collection, TV3, Ghana AIDS Commission and F.C. Cosmetics & Beauty Clinic. The rest are South African Airways, GTP, Billboard Communication. The next preliminary takes place in Accra at Erata Hotel at East Legon on Sunday at 12 noon.
