3G Media, a company based in USA, have done well for remembering the nation’s current and past heroes for the past three seasons but looking at this year’s awards nominations, I can boldly say that the award is granted based on selective favouritism.
Those who did the selection for this year’s awards were from blue kiosk and I don’t think the company should receive any praise for honouring these legends.
These are the names of those going for the award this Saturday in the USA, the current players chosen were Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien, Kwadwo Asamoah and John Mensah and the old Black Stars players are Abdul Razak, Rev. Osei Kofi, lbrahim Sunday, Mohamed Polo and Kuuku Dadzie.
There is no denying the fact that these old players were great but the selectors cannot convince me that these players were better than Kwasi Owusu of 1975 Black Stars fame. A man who captained the Black Stars for 10 good years and he is now a lotto agent sitting in a kiosk in Sunyani.
I don’t have any problem with the current squad selected for the awards but you can’t award without this great man from this great region Brong Ahafo. l have personally followed the awards and this is the third one they are going to organise and l tell you it is a biased awards night because the selection is only based on Accra and Kumasi personalities, unless they can tell us that the award is purposely arranged for Accra and Kumasi personalities.
I am not being tribalistic here but you could see in my analogy that of those players mentioned, none of them played their club football in other regions aside Greater Accra and Ashanti Region, I stand to be corrected though.
To me, any awards that does not feature the nomination of Daniel Owusu or Kwasi Owusu is favouritism awards and isn’t based on merit because among the players mentioned above Kwasi Owusu was greatest among them all.
I listened to one of the 3G Media Company members on Happy FM, Charles Nimo admit somebody in Ghana did the selection for them, which to me is wrong because they should have been in Ghana themselves and as a way of opinion poll they could have made it right.
For me this is a biased award and I don’t think it is a recognised event.
