2018 Youth Olympics swimming: Abeiku Jackson misses out on semis

Ghana’s swimming medal hopeful Abeiku Jackson missed out on qualification to the semi-finals of the men’s 100m butterfly event, even after placing second in heat three of six with a new personal best of 54.52 seconds yesterday.

Abeiku Jackson was number two on the reserve qualifiers’ list with best of time and hoped that at least two swimmers would not show up for the final round of heats for Monday’s evening session.

The 18-year-old had his hopes dashed as all athletes turned up for the event. The decorated swimmer improved his personal best by 0.28 seconds and will hope to improve upon it when he participates in the 50m butterfly event on Wednesday.

Abeiku Jackson is not the least disappointed that he did not make the semifinals of the 100m butterfly swimming event of the 2018 summer youth Olympics but would want to quickly focus on his next activity.

Jackson made history in 2016 as Ghana’s first male Olympic swimmer after competing in the 200 metres freestyle at the Summer Olympics. But before making an appearance at the competition, he had already won 34 gold medals and one silver medal at various international swimming competitions. He won two silver and two bronze in the 100m freestyle and fly and 50m freestyle and fly at this year’s All Africa Games held in Algeria.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian duo of Eric Tsatsu and Kelvin Carboo will seek to make amends in their second preliminary game of the beach volleyball event.

They play against fellow pool g side Monaco at 1900GMT today. The other pool fixture will be between Hungary and Costa Rica. That will be Ghana’s only competition schedule for today.
