A statement released by the organisers said: “This year’s championship competition hosted by the Legon Sharks will involve the following leading swimming clubs in Ghana: GH Dolphins, Lincoln Lions, Lincoln Blues, Ghana White Sharks, Ombi, and Ghana Blue Sharks. All these teams have confirmed their participation. The theme, ‘Swimming is HEALTHY’ promotes swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

“Attendance to this exciting swimming show is free. The competition will provide a nice opportunity for family relaxation. Exciting side attractions have been organised for your pleasure including music, food, comedy.”

It added: “The Legon Swimming Club is a registered non-profit organisation and a member of the Ghana Swimming Association. The club’s home is the University of Ghana Campus, Legon. The aim of the club is to promote swimming as a healthy lifestyle and sport with potential to support human capital development. The Legon Swimming Club is open to all children interested in improving their fitness, developing discipline and leadership skills and competing in the sport of swimming.

“The club currently has a membership of 30 active swimmers (both children and adults). Our Swimmers are nicknamed the Legon Sharks. A significant proportion of our swimmers are part of the Legon community (staff, students and wards). In addition, the club also has taken on talented children from the surrounding communities and training them as part of our swimming scholarship program.

“The club trains at the Legon swimming pool. During the three years of its existence, it has managed to attract much interest in swimming as a sport and recreational activity, particularly among young children.

“Beginning from 2013, the club has competed in every major swimming competition in Ghana and our Sharks have won several medals and honors. Our vision is to produce world class champion swimmers for Ghana in the next 5 to 10 years. Last year’s competition was a great success. We are riding our experience and on the back of that success to make Legon Swim 2017 even more successful.”
