?1bn GLICO insurance for Top Four clubs

The ongoing LG Top Four tournament has been given a shot in the arm with a ?1 billion insurance cover by Gemini Life Insurance Company Limited (GLICO).

The sponsorship deal makes the LG Top Four competition, the most lucrative football event in recent years. It seeks to protect the limbs of participating players who will thrill soccer fans until March 23.

Apart from the life assurance package, GLICO's sponsorship includes incentives for the most outstanding player, best goalie and best referee to further motivate them at the end of the competition.

Under the insurance package, GLICO will pay ?10m in the event of an accidental death, while a player who gets injured and cannot continue to play takes home ?850,000. Out of the ?1 billion, each of the participating teams, namely Hearts, Kotoko, Liberty Professionals and Olympics will be covered by ?250million.

In an interview with the Graphic last Friday, when the package was unveiled, Mr Eric L. F. Adane, the Director of Marketing and Field Operations of the company said that the insurance will cover all accidents concerning the competition, including the teams travelling to and from the matches.

Mr Adani said the effort is to ensure the well-being of the players and the entire officials to give their best.

He, therefore advised the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) to also encourage local entrepreneurs to assist in the development of Ghana soccer.
