Former Black Stars midfielder, Kevin-Prince Boateng, has disclosed that he initially feared the Black Stars would struggle badly at the 2010 FIFA World Cup after witnessing what he described as a lack of seriousness in the camp.

Boateng, who switched allegiance from Germany to Ghana before the tournament, admitted he was shocked by the atmosphere he met upon joining the national team.

“When I met them, I thought we were going to lose every game in the group stage because we were not playing together,” he revealed.

According to the former AC Milan player, the early days in the Black Stars camp appeared more relaxed than competitive, with players enjoying themselves instead of focusing intensely on preparations.

“There was no team spirit at the beginning. Everybody just came flashy with their cars and everybody enjoyed life. No one took it serious,” Boateng said.

The ex-Black Stars midfielder explained that his German football upbringing made it difficult for him to understand the carefree nature of the squad at the time.

He recalled how some players spent time dancing, joking and playing around while he remained focused on training and preparation.

Despite his early doubts, Prince Boateng said everything changed once the tournament began, as the players suddenly became more disciplined and determined.

“The moment we hit that field, it was a different team. Everybody was ready, focused and concentrated,” he stated.

Ghana went on to become one of the standout teams at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, reaching the quarter-finals and narrowly missing out on a historic semi-final spot.
