The government of Ghana has spent over $800,000 in compensation to the last four dismissed Black Stars coaches.

These coaches were hired and sacked prior to the end of their contracts under the current Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, while the team continued to struggle.

Since Kurt Okraku assumed office, the first coach to be dismissed was Charles Kwabena Akonnor in 2021, following a technical team report that deemed his performance unimpressive. He was paid $120,000 as compensation for the premature termination of his contract.

Next, Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac returned for a second stint after his historic run to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals. However, high hopes quickly turned into disappointment as the team performed poorly. The GFA dismissed him in 2022, and he also received $117,000 in compensation.

Afterwards, coach Chris Hughton took charge on January 23, 2024, and led the team to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). It was another disaster, as the team failed to win a single match and exited at the group stage. Following public backlash, Hughton was fired and was paid $68,904 in compensation, further burdening the nation financially.

Otto Addo was then reappointed in 2024 for a second stint. His tenure began poorly after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, which angered many Ghanaians. Despite calls for his dismissal, the GFA gave him a second chance, and he redeemed himself by securing qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the Black Stars’ friendly match results were disappointing, especially the humiliating defeat against Austria. The GFA eventually parted ways with him just months before the World Cup and is set to pay $500,000 in compensation.

Altogether, the government disclosed that compensation paid to coaches under Kurt Okraku’s administration amounts to $805,904.

These figures were disclosed by Government of Ghana reports as at April 1, 2026.
