Handle the Ghana cedi with care-Deputy Gov.

Accra, Aug 15, GNA - Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana on Wednesday appealed to Ghanaians to take good care of the new Ghana cedi notes.

He said it was disheartening to observe people mishandling the Ghana cedi. not only in the markets but also in churches when people go to make offertory.

"We are therefore appealing to all and sundry that we should be each others keeper when it comes to the handling of the Ghana cedi," he added.

The Deputy Governor made the appeal during the launch of the Ghana Commercial Bank MoneyGram in Accra.

The GCB MoneyGram is intended to provide a safe, convenient and competitive money transfer service throughout the branches of GCB in the country.

Mr Bawumia also expressed appreciation to the staff and management of the Ghana Commercial Bank and the banking industry as a whole for their support during the recent re-denomination exercise.

"We are aware of the strain this exercise put on your systems and staff but we knew we could count on our professionalism," he said He said the exercise was successful because of the immense contribution of the banks and the general public.

He therefore welcomed the decision of the Nigeria Central Bank to re-denominate the Naira from August 2008 saying 'this decision would serve to enhance the ECOWAS Monetary Cooperation Programme."
