The government has paid the salary arrears of Ghana Airways workers except that of January this year.
For close to seven months when it was clear that operations of the national carrier were going to be folded up, salaries for the workers were not forthcoming.
This became a headache for the management task force that was put in place to oversee the daily operations of the airline.
The continuous non-payment of the salary of workers further worsened the plight of the ailing airline.
Although it is not clear when exactly operations of Ghana Airways will wind up, Road Transport Minister Dr. Richard Anane told Joy News that the payment of all salary arrears is a positive indication that Ghana Airways will soon fold up.
This will then enable the new airline, Ghana International Airlines to take off by the middle of the year as promised.
?Ghana Airways has not been working for sometime and government has to find money to pay the staff and my understanding is that it is left with the month of January for the workers to completely leave the company but the Union and management are also negotiating with government to come to a common understanding as to how much should be paid to the workers as their end of service benefit.? he said.
A number of workers of Ghana Airways will lose their daily bread when the company folds up.
Some have complained that the continuous silence over their fate is making it difficult for them to look for jobs particularly those who have been bonded by Ghana Airways.
Dr. Anane said the current position of Ghana Airways negates the bonds signed by some employees.
?If you are trained by an institution and the institution is no more I wonder whether the question of funding comes in, but believe that if you are put under bond by an institution that is no more or unless the institution before it ceases to function puts some burden unto you I don?t see how you would be held by anybody.? He said
