Wa, Nov. 15, GNA - A one-day inter-school basketball competition involving eight schools took place at the Wa Secondary School in the in the Upper West Region on Saturday.
The schools were Wa Secondary School, Wa Secondary Technical, Kanton Secondary School, Nandom Secondary School, Lawra Secondary School, lassia Tuolu Secondary School and Xavier Minor Seminary for the boys division while Wa Secondary, St. Francis Girls Secondary, Kanton Secondary and Wa Secondary Technical competed in the girls division.
Opening the ceremony, Mr. Jacob Bagonluuri, Upper West Regional Director of Education, in a speech read on his behalf, called on the students to exhibit a high level of sportsmanship and be disciplined.
He commended Unilever for sponsoring the competition, "a discipline which was almost forgotten about" and hoped that more organizations would team up with Unilever to promote games in secondary schools.
Mr. Bagonluuri regretted that Upper West Region, which abounds in sporting talents could not claim respectability at the national level and called for more financial and logistics support to help develop sports.
In the opening matches, St. Francis Girls Secondary beat Wa Secondary girls 6-2, while Nandom Secondary accounted for Wa Secondary boys 9-4.
