NDC's approach to requesting BVR serial numbers from the EC is Lazy - NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has responded to the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) request to the Electoral Commission for the serial numbers of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits used in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

Haruna Mohammed, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, speaking on the matter, urged the NDC to trust the EC ahead of the 2024 polls, labeling the request as a lazy approach.

The NDC had formally written to the EC demanding the release of the serial numbers of the BVR kits used in the current registration exercise, stating that the action was to ensure transparency during the elections.

However, the Electoral Commission, in a statement on May 9, denied the request, explaining that fulfilling such a demand could compromise the security and integrity of the electoral system and its operations.

The NPP's Deputy Secretary, commenting on the issue, said, "I think the NDC is very lazy in their work to ask for BVR serial numbers from the EC. If you read the CI carefully, which regulates registrations in Ghana, you'll realize that all political parties have agents across all 268 centers where registration occurs.

"These machines are displayed, and the number of machines allocated to each center is clearly known. What I do know is that in all registrations we have conducted, no political parties have been given serial numbers of these machines.

"But I don't know exactly if they meant to receive these serial numbers; their agents can't easily again get these particulars, names, and details of these machines to them," he stated.
