How Kwame Nkrumah predicted Ghana's struggles - Major (rtd) Gordon Amenyah recounts

A retired soldier has shared a story of a speech given by Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in 1963.

At an undisclosed event, the soldier, who identified himself as Major (rtd) Gordon Amenyah, recounted Nkrumah's words, urging officers to defend both Ghana and his leadership, warning that failure to do so would lead to future hardships for the nation.

“We heard somebody knocking on the table. Then the room became quiet and he (Kwame Nkrumah) gave a short speech. What I gathered from that speech was that… ‘I have commissioned you these officers to defend Ghana and defend me, Nkrumah. If you fail to defend me, Ghana will suffer in the future.’

The veteran lamented that Nkrumah's cautionary words have come to pass, as he believes Ghana is currently facing difficulties.

He spoke of opponents who, unable to lead Ghana to independence, have since harboured resentment towards Nkrumah's achievements.

According to the soldier, these adversaries have been attempting to erase Nkrumah's contributions from history.

“Today, we are suffering. That speech in 1963 has come true. The opponent wished they had led the independence, but they couldn't do it. So they developed a sheer deep hatred to destroy everything that Nkrumah did. And they are still destroying.

“They want to wipe out Nkrumah's name, but they can't do it because we are alive and we shall train our children and children's children and generations,” he said.
