How I was 'kicked' out of Black Stars and framed by the media - Sani Mohammed bares it all

Former Black Stars goalkeeper Sani Mohammed has shared his disappointment with how the media contributed to making him a villain in the eyes of Ghanaians.

The legendary Hearts of Oak goalie revealed that he was wrongly accused and got dropped from the Black Stars squad.

He explained that during Ghana's 2006 World Cup qualifier against South Africa, he and Patrick Antwi, second and third-choice goalies, respectively, were snubbed for George Owu as a replacement for the injured first-choice goalie, Sammy Adjei.

Sani continued that when the media probed the GFA authorities about the decision to start George Owu over him, the officials disclosed that he (Sani Mohammed) was unwilling to play that game.

He asserted that the media did not seek his side of the story and ran with the officials' allegations.

"At the time, the Black Stars had three goalkeepers - Sammy Adjei, Patrick Antwi, and I. George Owu came in after I was falsely accused and dropped. The media blacklisted me and didn't seek my side of the story," he said in a video sighted by GhanaWeb on Tiktok.

"I was watching TV, and they said I made an excuse that I was ill and decided not to play the game. Meanwhile, we were three. Sammy Adjei was the first goalkeeper, Patrick Antwi was the second, and I was the third. They snubbed both of us, and no one said anything to me." he added.

"We were in camp when George Owu arrived. He then got chosen for the game. When we came to Ghana, they lied to Ghanaians that I said I wouldn't play. Why did they not talk about Patrick Antwi, who was the second goalkeeper? They were talking and running me down."

He further highlighted how the media treated him amidst the allegations.

"No media house bothered to ask for my side of the story. They ran with what they (Black Stars officials) said. But at the time, I was in a better form and shape than George Owu."

The retired goalkeeper also recounted a frustrating situation where he was made to play as a left-back during a training camp in Kenya.

"When we went to Kenya, they made me play left back while Patrick Antwi and George Owu were the goalkeepers in training. And no media house asked for my side of the story. No sensible journalist asked why but kept talking about me and not the second goalkeeper."

Sani Mohammed was a member of the Black Stars squad that qualified Ghana for their first-ever World Cup.

He did not play any minutes throughout the qualifiers but was called up for three games- Burkina Faso, DR Congo and South Africa.
