Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has defended Abdul Fatawu Issahaku's decision to decline a call-up to be part of Ghana's team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Fatawu Issahaku chose to stay with Leicester City while the AFCON was ongoing in Ivory Coast.

For Asamoah Gyan, although it was sad that the Black Stars missed the services of Fatawu, his decision paid off in the end.

"Although we needed him in the national team, for him not to come to the AFCON, I think, was the best decision he made because he had to focus on his playing career and make sure he gets to the height. Ghanaians had patience for him despite a little criticism, but I think it has paid off."

Issahaku played a crucial role in Leicester City's promotion to the Premier League.

The player scored six goals and provided 13 assists in the Championship for Leicester City.
