------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Two NPP supporters killed in accident

From Kwame Asare Boadu, Sunyani

THE jubilation that greeted the victory of Mr J. A. Kufuor of the NPP in the run-off of the presidential elections at Wamfie in the Brong Ahafo Region at the weekend turned sour when a speeding articulated truck ran through jubilant supporters of the party, killing two on the spot and seriously injuring two others.

The deceased have been identified as Adu Gyamfi, 29 a teacher and Alex Atta 22, a photographer. The injured are on admission at the Berekum Hospital.

The driver allegedly ignored signals from bystanders at a distance from the scene of the accident to stop, before running through them.

The accident so incensed the people of the town that a mob besieged the police station where the driver allegedly ran to and demanded that he should be released to them to be killed.

When the police refused, they set the police station on fire and in the process, the driver, whose name was not immediately known, fled.

The mob also set the truck on fire later.

Soldiers from Sunyani have been deployed in the town to avoid any further disturbances.

According to eyewitnesses, after the announcement of the victory of Mr Kufuor in the run-off, supporters of the party took to the streets of the town, singing and dancing.

The witnesses said while the supporters were jubilating, an articulated truck loaded with lumber pulled up from the Berekum end of the road at top speed.

Some people who saw danger ahead, signalled the driver to slow down but he refused.

The witnesses said the driver then ran through the supporters, killing two on the spot.

He, however, managed to run to the police station after which the mob stormed the station to demand instant justice on him.

Police personnel on duty confirmed the incident but refused to give any details.

In another development, a car knocked down an NPP supporter who was jubilating with other party members at Nsoatre at the weekend.

A resident told the Graphic that he sustained serious injuries and has been hospitalised.

Meanwhile, the Sunyani township was thrown into a state of jubilation following the victory of Mr Kufuor.

Cars tooted their horns while the supporters danced to brass band music through the principal streets.

A number of drinking bars were also jammed with supporters of the NPP as well as other minority parties.

The military were positioned in the area near the NPP regional office to avoid any excesses
