3 Ghanaians dead, as Toronto commuter train hits van TORONTO - Five people in a van were killed Friday when a passenger train packed with commuters smashed into their vehicle north of Toronto. Unconfirmed reports indicate, 3 of the five were Ghanaians. GO Transit officials say there were no injuries on board the train, which was carrying up to 800 passengers at the time.

All five people in the van were adults. Three of them were thrown from the vehicle.

The van burst into flames and was dragged along the tracks before falling into a deep ditch in the industrial area. Police say the debris is scattered around the site.

The collision occurred about 7:25 a.m. ET in the town of Concord, north of Toronto. The train was coming from Bradford at the time. There are barriers and lights at the crossing. Police and officials from the National Transportation Safety Board are trying to figure out whether they were working properly.

Transit spokesperson Edmund Shea says the company doesn't believe the crash is related to a strike by GO Transit maintenance workers.

The 134 maintenance workers went on strike May 29, causing some disruptions in service.
