Silians would recall how Nkrumah warmed up to the Chinese and that he was actually in China on his way to Vietnam when the news of the coup in Ghana was broken to him. For some absurd reasons and belief, Nkrumah thought he could broker peace in the then Vietnam war which in reality was a proxy one between the the Soviet Union and China on one hand the United States and her allies on the other. It was a war between the super powers and a bottle of ideologies and geopolitical influence.

Why on Earth Nkrumah ever believed these forces would listen to him an African has had me sucking my thumbs for years. Was he looking at a Noble Peace Prize or something?

Anyway that was a little digression and back to the theme of the story. As soon as the Chinese confrmed that Nkrumah was no longer president, they discreetly withdrew all the privileges given to a head of state but let him complete a few minor engagements. Afterwards they offered him an aircraft telling him he could fly to anywhere he wanted to. Mind you, they DID NOT GRANT HIM ASYLUM!

The Ghana Airways VC 10 had flown to Hanoi with the advance delegation and the crew once they heard of the coup wisely flew back to Ghana, by passing China and Nkrumah.

Nkrumah and his over eighty person delegation made their way first to Egypt, and eventually Guinea, with many of the officials jumping ship along the way.

The curious and interesting thing is that the Chinese officially recognized the new regime in Ghana within three months.

You see when it comes to business, the Chinese also believe in the principle of having permanent interests but not permanent friends!

Nuff Respect
