'Ghanaians watch horrible Nollywood movies but reject ours' – Yvonne Okoro

Popular Ghanaian actress Yvonne Okoro has criticised Ghanaians for what she describes as a lack of support for locally produced movies. She argued that many people perceive Ghanaian content as inferior to foreign productions. Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on October 25, 2026, the actress said some Ghanaians are quick to dismiss local movies while enthusiastically watching productions from Nigeria, even when the quality of the latter may be questionable. According to her, this attitude makes it difficult for Ghanaian filmmakers to attract audiences, regardless of the effort they put into promoting their productions. ‘Shirley is crazy’ - Yvonne Okoro reveals her first reaction after reading ‘Agency for the Dead’ script “Ghanaians do not support our own. Everything Ghanaian, we see it as sub-standard. When you say it, people get offended by it, but it’s the truth,” she said. Yvonne Okoro observed that some viewers question whether a Ghanaian movie will be worth watching before even giving it a chance, yet readily consume Nigerian films, including productions shared on YouTube. “They would even be doubting if the movie will be nice, but they’re watching some horrible Nollywood movies. They’re watching it and they’re clapping. You’re watching some YouTube movies from my people in Nigeria and you think it’s fantastic,” she stated. The actress further argued that Ghanaian filmmakers often face unfair criticism because of the nationality of the people behind their productions. “But then, let it be a Ghanaian who does it, they would say we don’t know how to do anything. They just won’t come and watch it no matter how you market it,” she added.
