Asiedu Nketiah backs greater role for churches in managing mission schools

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has backed calls by the Christian Council of Ghana for the state to grant religious bodies a greater role in the management of mission-founded schools. Speaking at the official launch of a multi-million-cedi College of Education project as part of the centenary celebration of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church at Sekyedumase, Asiedu Nketiah said empowering churches to play a greater role in school management would encourage them to invest more resources in the country’s educational infrastructure. He said the main motivation for religious bodies to invest in schools was to enable their members to raise children according to the core beliefs and discipline of their faith. “The main driving force for religious bodies to invest in the building of schools is the need for their members to bring up their children in the core beliefs and discipline of their faith,” Asiedu Nketiah told the gathering. The role of religious organisations in managing Ghana’s mission schools has been the subject of a long-running national debate. Under the current arrangement, the government provides funding for teachers and infrastructure, while mission authorities retain their founding interests and have oversight of discipline and the religious ethos of the schools.Source: Eric Obeng Boateng, Contributor
