Why I chose NPP despite family’s NDC ties – Abanga Fusaini Yakubu explains

Newly elected National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, has explained why he chose to support the party despite growing up in an area where the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has traditionally enjoyed strong support.
Abanga says his decision to join the NPP was based on his personal political conviction.
Speaking on Channel One's TV Face to Face on October 6, 2026, he said he had supported the NPP from a young age and believed the party was best placed to transform Ghana.
According to him, he eventually felt it was important to formally align himself with the party and contribute to its political activities.

“Growing up, I've always believed that NPP is the only political party that can change the fortunes of this country. And I felt that it's important to align and belong to them.
“I felt that it's important to align and belong to them. And also when they get the opportunity to serve,” he noted.
Abanga acknowledged that his political choice was not necessarily the dominant one in his traditional area.
He noted that the area has historically leaned more towards the NDC, making his decision to support the NPP a personal choice.
His political conviction also differs from that of his twin brother, Hassan, who is the NDC National Vice Chairman.
Abanga explained that the brothers attended the same primary and senior high schools but developed different political identities as they grew older.
Their parents also have different political affiliations, with their mother supporting the NPP and their father identifying with the NDC.
"They (my parents) love politics, but not active politicians. My dad is an NDC man. My mom is an NPP man," he said.
Abanga further disclosed that his relationship with his twin brother would not influence him to switch to the NDC.
