‘I am not in favour’ - Togbe Afede rejects extension of presidential term

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has rejected calls to extend Ghana’s presidential term beyond four years.
According to a report by onuaonline.com, he said the economic difficulties the country faced in 2022, 2023 and 2024 are among the reasons he does not support extending the term.
Why Ghana must keep two-term presidential limits – Asiedu Nketiah explains
Speaking at the 2026 Asogli Teza on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Togbe Afede said he could not imagine spending another year under the kind of government Ghana had during that period.
“Let me add that we all saw the difficulties of the years 2022, 2023, 2024 in particular, and for me, the consequences that we experienced are the reasons why I am not in favour of extending the presidential term beyond four years,” he was quoted to have said.
He said that although there may be reasons to consider a longer presidential term, the impact of a government’s decisions on the people must also be taken into account.
“Because I cannot, or I could not imagine one more year under the kind of government we had at the time,” he added.
It will be recalled that the extension of the presidential term from four to five years was part of the many proposals from the Constitution Review Committee chaired by Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh.
The Committee presented its final report to President John Dramani Mahama on December 22, 2025.
The Committee argued that the current four-year term leaves little time for effective governance, with the first six months taken up by the transition and appointment of officials, while the final year is dominated by election campaigns.
The Presidency: Why the four-year term must be defended
Meanwhile, the government has accepted the recommendation, with the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, announcing the government’s position at a press conference at the Presidency on Wednesday, July 30, 2026.
