'Who is Karbo to overrule my orders?’ – Buttey fumes over NPP amendment controversy

Former Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Danquah Smith Buttey, has questioned the authority of Anthony Abayifaa Karbo to overrule his decision to defer the party’s proposed constitutional amendments at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference.
Speaking in an interview on Ezra Adekyee, and sighted by GhanaWeb on October 6, 2026, Buttey said he had announced the deferment in his capacity as Acting National Chairman because he believed the conference did not have sufficient time to properly consider the amendments while also conducting the national executive elections.
However, the constitutional amendments were subsequently considered and approved by delegates, including the controversial provision making the party’s elected presidential candidate its leader.
The amendment effectively makes Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2028 flagbearer, the leader of the party while it remains in opposition.
Buttey, reacting to the development, questioned Karbo’s role in the process, arguing that as the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the conference, he had no authority to overturn a directive issued by the Acting National Chairman.
NPP approves 14 constitutional amendments despite earlier call for postponement
“Who is he in the party to defer my orders? If you are MC for the conference, he is not the owner of the programme,” he said.
He maintained that his decision was motivated by his desire to protect the interests of the party and ensure that delegates had adequate time to scrutinise the proposed amendments before voting on them.
“I only want what’s best for the party, I am not against anybody, I have finished with my mandate and I am leaving,” Buttey indicated.
Buttey stressed that his tenure had ended following the election of new national executives but said he remained concerned about the wellbeing and future of the NPP.
The NPP ultimately approved all 14 proposed constitutional amendments at the conference in Kumasi, despite Buttey’s earlier call for the exercise to be postponed.
