I wish the phrase 'the Lord told me’ is banned in Africa - Ps Mensa Otabil

The General Overseer of International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil has made a shocking remark on the frequent use of phrases such as ‘The Lord told me’ and ‘The Holy Ghost told me’ among the Christian fraternity.

He suggested that many clerics hide behind the phrase to avoid accountability and transparency.

He said while people may genuinely believe they have received divine instructions, such declarations should not be used to shield individuals from responsibility for their actions or decisions.

In a video shared on TikTok and sighted by GhanaWeb on October 6, 2026, Pastor Otabil said he wished certain spiritual expressions could be banned in Africa for a period to encourage people to rely more on personal integrity.

“If there is any phrase I wish we can ban in Africa for the next 10 years, it is ‘The Lord said’. ‘The Holy Ghost said’. ‘The Holy Ghost told me’,” he said.

Africa is the hope of Christianity – Pastor Otabil

According to him, the use of such expressions can sometimes conceal dishonest conduct, particularly when individuals invoke God to justify their actions or influence others.

“Behind the ‘Lord told me’ is often a lot of deception, cheating and crookishness,” Pastor Otabil stated.

He stressed that genuine character should be demonstrated through consistency and honesty rather than dramatic spiritual declarations.

Referring to the teaching of Jesus Christ, he said people must reach a point where their words can be trusted without the need to attach a divine authority to them.

“We need to reach a place where our yes is yes and no is no. That is called character,” he indicated.
