Who is Dwight Yorke? The Former Man United star linked with Black Stars job

Former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke has emerged as one of the names linked with the vacant Black Stars coaching position after expressing his interest in becoming Ghana’s next head coach.
The Trinidad and Tobago-born former striker is not new to coaching, having managed at both club and international level in recent years.
Yorke began his senior coaching career with Australian side Macarthur FC, taking charge between 2022 and 2023.
During his time with the club, he managed 18 matches, recording 10 wins, two draws and six defeats.
His short spell in Australia ended on a high as he guided Macarthur FC to victory in the Australia Cup, giving him his first major piece of silverware as a senior coach.
Yorke subsequently moved into international management, taking charge of Trinidad and Tobago from 2024 to 2026.
He managed the Soca Warriors in 17 matches, winning four, drawing seven and losing six.
One of the notable achievements of his tenure was helping Trinidad and Tobago qualify for the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Yorke has therefore experienced both sides of international football management and club coaching, although his two senior appointments have been relatively brief.
His preferred formation has been listed as 4-2-3-1, while his average coaching tenure stands at around one year.
Yorke and the Black Stars job
Yorke’s name has surfaced at a difficult moment for Ghana following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.
The Portuguese coach and the Ghana Football Association mutually parted ways after the Black Stars suffered defeats to Cote d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their opening two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
Ghana lost 2-0 to Cote d’Ivoire before surrendering a two-goal lead to suffer a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia.
The results left the Black Stars bottom of Group C without a point and triggered the search for a new head coach.
The GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have subsequently formed a five-member committee to identify and recommend a successor.
Former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe chairs the committee, with Anthony Baffoe, Agbesi Dzakpasu, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah completing the panel.
York’s potential move to Ghana would represent another step in a relatively young coaching career.
