Boakye Agyarko was seen as anti-Bawumia – Lecturer on John Boadu’s victory

Political Science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr Jonathan Asante Otchere, has attributed part of John Boadu’s victory in the NPP chairmanship race to the narrative surrounding his main contender, Boakye Agyarko. Speaking on Citi FM, Dr Asante Otchere said the election was shaped by the perception that Boakye Agyarko was opposed to former NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. “It was part of the narrative that Boakye Agyarko was anti-Bawumia,” he said. Dr Asante Otchere said the narrative needed to be considered when assessing why Boadu, who had been trailing in the previous context, ultimately emerged victorious. He noted that polling had placed Boadu ahead of Agyarko before the election, raising questions about what had changed among delegates and what ultimately influenced their choice. He said the same considerations that led delegates to reject Boadu for the General Secretary position four years earlier had not necessarily changed, yet he still secured the chairmanship. “Since those factors have not changed, for me, it was a wrong decision on the part of the delegates to elect John Boadu,” he said.
