Nearly 2,000 Ghanaians die from breast cancer annually – Gender Minister

Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has disclosed that nearly 2,000 people die from breast cancer in Ghana every year. She said the country records about 5,000 new cases of breast cancer annually, a situation she said requires intensified public education, early detection, timely diagnosis and access to appropriate treatment. Dr Lartey made the disclosure on October 1, 2026, when the Ministry officially launched this year’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, popularly known as Pink October, in Ho in the Volta Region. “Ghana records about 5,000 new cases of breast cancer annually, resulting in nearly 2,000 deaths. We must therefore intensify awareness, promote early detection and ensure timely diagnosis and access to appropriate care,” she indicated. The campaign, held under the theme “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” seeks to highlight the different experiences of breast cancer patients and survivors while promoting greater support for people affected by the disease. She also called for myths and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer to be addressed, noting that such beliefs could discourage people from going for screening and seeking medical support. Dr Lartey further appealed to families and communities to avoid stigmatising breast cancer patients and survivors and instead provide them with the necessary support throughout their treatment and recovery. She urged the media to sustain public education on breast cancer beyond the month of October and encouraged Ghanaians to become advocates for early detection, treatment and support throughout the year.
