'I didn't campaign for the NDC to come and do this nonsense' - Martin Kpebu

Lawyer Martin Kpebu has criticised some appointees of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, accusing them of misusing their authority and engaging in conduct that could undermine public confidence in the administration. Kpebu said he did not support the NDC’s return to power in the 2024 general elections only for some officials to engage in what he described as “nonsense.” His comments come amid the ongoing controversy involving the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. Speaking in an interview, Kpebu expressed frustration over what he considered the inappropriate use of legal powers by some government appointees and warned that such conduct could have serious political consequences for the NDC. “It is a shame; I didn't campaign for the NDC to come and do this nonsense,” myjoyonline.com quoted him as saying in a news report on October 4, 2026. Kpebu, who said he campaigned vigorously for the NDC ahead of the 2024 elections, recalled the difficulties he and others faced while supporting the party during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo. “Do you know how we suffered? Akufo-Addo, do you know how dangerous he was? Do you know what we lost?” he asked. He questioned why, after the NDC had regained power, some of its appointees were allegedly using their positions in ways he considered inappropriate. “Then you (NDC) come, this is how you are misusing the power?” he lamented. According to Kpebu, his concerns are rooted in the sacrifices made by party supporters to help the NDC return to government, making the conduct of some officials particularly disappointing. He further cautioned that the manner in which state institutions such as EOCO handle matters could affect the government's reputation and erode public trust. Kpebu also warned that the controversy surrounding EOCO could have electoral implications for the NDC, arguing that the agency’s actions and inactions could contribute to the party losing power in the 2028 general elections. Meanwhile, the MP has since been admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢10 million by the High Court, with the court requiring him to remain available to investigators while the case proceeds. 'No dirt can stick on me' - Baffour Awuah breaks silence after EOCO detention He is scheduled to appear before the court again on October 26 and November 2, 2026, at 10 a.m. Nana Baffour Awuah also expressed appreciation to the leadership of Parliament and his fellow lawmakers for their support throughout the matter. He said the backing from his party, Parliament and the people of Manhyia South had further strengthened his determination to continue serving in his capacity as MP. “My constituency has been amazing. I really love all of them, and they will be rest assured that my commitment to you remains resolute. This is not going to deter me,” he said.
