'NDC won't intimidate us; we will fight until victory in 2028' – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the John Mahama-led government of using state power to intimidate critics while failing to hold major drug traffickers accountable. Speaking at the 2026 NPP Delegates Conference on October 3, 2026, Afenyo-Markin questioned why individuals allegedly behind major drug trafficking operations had not been brought to justice. “Where are the big names behind the drugs? Where are the criminal convictions? And what does the government do with all its power? It goes after its critics,” he asked. He alleged that several opposition figures had been arrested or detained for exercising their right to free speech, citing Chairman Wuntumi, Kwame Abafo-Abronye, Dennis Miracle-Aboagye , Camila Alhassan, Baba Armando and Salome Awiti-Bafo. Afenyo-Markin also criticised the reported attempt to arrest the Member of Parliament for Mankessim South, Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, at a courthouse after he appeared as counsel in a bail application. “We assure you all that we will defend our freedoms, insist on equal justice, and pursue accountability through lawful democratic means,” he said. The seven-year plan Nkrumah drew up to transform Ghana's economy The Minority Leader further raised concerns about judicial independence, urging judicial leaders to remain politically neutral. “Presidents come and go. Parties win and lose. But the bench must remain the bench. Its loyalty must be to the Constitution. Its purpose must be justice,” he added. Turning to the government’s economic record, Afenyo-Markin criticised what he described as failures to implement key campaign promises, including the 24-hour economy, while also citing high electricity tariffs and challenges facing farmers. He urged members of the opposition not to lose hope, insisting that the NPP would continue to challenge the government through democratic means. “None of us should panic. No despair,” he said. Afenyo-Markin concluded by declaring that the NPP would remain resolute in its opposition to the Mahama administration. “NDC won’t intimidate us; we will fight until victory in 2028,” he concluded.
