Godfred Dame accuses EOCO, CID of 'targeting' political opponents

Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has accused state investigative and law enforcement institutions of using their powers to settle political scores, citing the detention of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.

In a Facebook post on October 3, 2026, Dame criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Attorney-General’s Office over what he described as an unprecedented abuse of the powers to arrest, investigate and prosecute.

“The deployment of state power to settle scores and punish political opponents is the lowest point of law enforcement,” he wrote.

His criticism centred on the detention of Baffour Awuah, who he said had spent two nights in EOCO custody without bail over a transaction involving GH¢2.2 million in legal fees.

Dame questioned both the justification for keeping the MP in custody and whether the conduct under investigation constituted a criminal offence.

“On what account does Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah (MP) spend 2 nights in EOCO custody without bail?” he asked.

He argued that other leading politicians had faced investigations or trials without spending a day in custody.

He cited former minister Alhaji Collins Dauda, saying he was granted self-recognisance bail while standing trial over an alleged financial loss of approximately US$198 million.

Dame also referred to Cassiel Ato Forson, whom he said was granted self-recognisance bail in a prosecution involving €2.3 million, and Dr Dominic Ayine, who, according to him, was granted bail during investigations into his role in the Ameri deal in 2017.

The former Attorney General said the cases raised concerns about the consistency with which politicians were treated and whether their rights were being respected while in custody.

He further alleged that law enforcement agencies were targeting political opponents and silencing critics while serious crimes, including drug trafficking, continued.

EOCO provides update on probe

Meanwhile, EOCO has said it is working with the Attorney General’s Office to bring Baffour Awuah before a weekend court.

In a statement issued on October 2, 2026, EOCO said the MP was cooperating with investigators and rejected reports that it had granted him GH¢50 million bail.

According to the Office, the investigation concerns allegations including financial loss to the state, money laundering and tax-related offences involving SIC Life Savings and Loans.

EOCO said it would conduct the investigation professionally, independently and in accordance with due process, while respecting the constitutional rights of all persons involved.
