La Beach Demolition: Dr Bawumia promises leases for affected businesses

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has outlined plans to rebuild the business and tourism ecosystem at La Beach following the demolition of structures in the area. In a statement issued on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia described La Beach as a socially, economically and culturally significant area that provides livelihoods for thousands of people, particularly young people. He said the area had developed into a major beach destination and had hosted several international events and shows. Dr Bawumia also criticised the demolition, describing it as unfortunate and expressing concern about the destruction of movable assets belonging to some businesses. “It’s sad that this very significant enclave has been demolished so wantonly. It is particularly painful and surprising that even movable assets which the owners could have removed easily were destroyed in a most bizarre fashion,” he said. Dr Bawumia said he was committed to making La Beach a major tourism and economic enclave and outlined five measures he said would be pursued. He said businesses would be issued leases as part of efforts to rebuild the beach economy. “We will rebuild the beach economy and issue leases to each business,” he said. He also proposed redesigning the area to meet required standards while assisting businesses to operate within those standards. According to him, space would be secured for Labadi Beach Hotel and other major operators while allowing smaller businesses to coexist within the wider beach ecosystem. “We will secure the space for Labadi Beach Hotel and others and allow them to coexist with smaller businesses who together create the beach ecosystem,” he said. Dr Bawumia further said he would engage the owners of LABOMA Beach to address their concerns and help them establish their businesses in compliance with the law. He also pledged to work on the lagoon and address issues relating to flooding and the environment. The NPP flagbearer said his proposed measures were aimed at protecting the jobs and livelihoods supported by businesses in the beach area. “I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” he said.
