BoG pledges technical support to Liberia's central bank

The Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Matilda Asante-Asiedu, has reaffirmed the central bank’s commitment to supporting the Central Bank of Liberia through technical assistance and knowledge sharing. She said cooperation between central banks is important in building strong and efficient financial systems across Africa. SEC boss calls for stronger rules as Africa expands virtual asset participation According to a post on the Bank of Ghana’s official Facebook page sighted by GhanaWeb Business, Asante-Asiedu made the remarks during a meeting with the Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia, Henry F. Saamoi, and his delegation at Bank Square on Thursday, October 1, 2026. The visit forms part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two institutions following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier this year. The agreement focuses on capacity building, technical cooperation and knowledge sharing to support the development of both institutions. Asante-Asiedu stressed the need for African central banks to learn from one another and share experiences to improve their financial systems. “Peer learning, regional cooperation and capacity building are important in building resilient, innovative and efficient financial systems across Africa,” she said. During the meeting, the Liberian delegation expressed interest in learning from Ghana’s experience in developing its payment systems infrastructure, particularly the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS). The delegation included Saamoi and officials from the Central Bank of Liberia. Two senior officials previously identified in connection with the central bank’s cooperation with Ghana are Deputy Governor for Operations James B. Wilfred and Deputy Governor for Economic Policy Dr Musa Dukuly. However, their participation in the October 1 visit has not been confirmed. The delegation is seeking to understand the processes, institutional arrangements and lessons from the establishment of GhIPSS to help strengthen Liberia’s own payment systems. Asante-Asiedu assured the delegation of the Bank of Ghana’s continued support, adding that cooperation between the two central banks would help advance financial sector development in the West African sub-region.
