The story behind the 100-year-old tree with roots in the air

At Anum in the Eastern Region stands a remarkable tree that has attracted attention for its unusual appearance, with some of its roots visibly hanging in the air.
Believed to be about 100 years old, the tree has become a distinctive natural feature in the community, drawing curiosity because of the way its roots have grown and remained suspended above the ground.
According to accounts from Seth Adu Mensah, the tree was originally one of a pair of twin trees that grew naturally many decades ago.
However, the second tree was eventually washed away by rain, leaving the surviving tree standing in its unusual form.
Despite its appearance, it is said that there is no spiritual story attached to the tree and that its growth is entirely natural.
'This tree was planted by my ancestor hundreds of years ago and my family settled here'
The tree is said to have developed firm roots that have allowed it to remain standing even as portions of the root system became exposed.
The exposed roots have since become one of its most striking features.
People can reportedly sit on the tree, climb around it and play on or near its exposed roots without any spiritual consequences.
Contrary to suggestions that unusual trees of this nature may be associated with witchcraft, spirits or other supernatural beliefs, accounts about the Anum tree maintain that there is nothing mystical about it.
Its story is instead one of natural growth, survival and the effects of time and the surrounding environment.
The century-old tree therefore remains an interesting natural landmark at Anum, offering a glimpse into how trees can adapt to changes in their environment while surviving for generations.
