The Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Aduna Bingab Nitiwul, has come under criticism over comments he made concerning the planned demolition of parts of the Agbogbloshie market to make way for a 24-hour economy market.
The former Defence Minister described the proposed demolition of structures where members of the Konkomba tribe sell yams as “politically suicidal” if the government goes ahead with the exercise.
In a video shared on social media, Nitiwul expressed concern that the structures marked for demolition by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) appeared to be concentrated in the section of Agbogbloshie occupied by Konkomba traders.
According to the Bimbilla MP, the exercise appears to be targeted at removing the Konkomba community from Accra, arguing that other sections of the market had been left untouched while the area where the Konkombas sell their yams had been marked for demolition.
“We don’t see what the Kokomba tribe has done against the government, that they have only come to the centre of Agbogbloshie where the Kokombas reside and decided to site the 24-hour market there.
“They left the side this way, they left the side behind. They left the side at the other side, but only marked where the Konkomba people are and we feel that it is targeted at just removing the Kokombas from Accra. That’s all,” he said.
Nitiwul further questioned whether the stated reason for the demolition was solely to construct a 24-hour economy market, arguing that the size of the area marked for demolition appeared to be far larger than what would ordinarily be required for such a project.

“We do not believe that the agenda of the AMA chief executive is to build a 24-hour market because the land, the size of the land they have demarcated, is far beyond what they need for a 24-hour market.
“I have one in my constituency, he has one in his constituency, we know the size of land they need. Why is it that only where the Konkombas are the places that he marked? Did you observe that or not?” he asked.
The Bimbilla MP also questioned what he described as the selective marking of structures within the area.
“What did they do that you have decided to come to the centre where the Kokomba are? If you check the stretch, this bridge to that bridge, the centre is where the Kokombas are. You left all other areas and came to where only the Kokombas are, where they have their market.
“You’ve marked every store in the market to be demolished, you have also marked where they also sleep to be demolished and left every other person. What crime have they committed? Are they not Ghanaians? So why? Why are they being targeted?” he said.
Nitiwul subsequently appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to halt the proposed demolition if the government could not develop the area in a way that would allow the Konkomba traders to continue selling their yams.
He said the market should be left untouched if the government was not prepared to assist the traders, adding that another government could undertake the development in the future.
“So Mr President, stop your mayor. Mr President, let him stop targeting the Konkomba tribe. If you cannot help develop the market for the Kokombas to sell their yams, stop. Another president will come and do it. They are not moving tomorrow,” he noted.
The former Defence Minister further warned that allowing the demolition to proceed could have political consequences for President Mahama.
“It will be politically suicidal for the president to allow the mayor to touch and to do what he is thinking of doing. I will not expand on that, but we are saying that what we saw is not a good thing,” he said.
Nitiwul, however, clarified that his objection was not against the government’s 24-hour economy policy or the construction of a 24-hour market.
“Nobody is asking that we don’t want a 24-hour market. No, far from that. But the Konkomba yam market where they sell purely yam is totally different from the activities of the 24-hour market,” he noted.
His comments have since attracted criticism from some social media users, with some questioning the basis of his claims and accusing him of making statements that could inflame ethnic tensions.
One netizen described the comments as “gibberish”, writing: “Gibberish talk from both MPs, who only care about votes. Funny enough, if you ask them for evidence, they will be found wanting.”
Another user argued that comments of that nature could contribute to tribal tensions.
“This is how they incite tribal wars in the north which becomes suicidal and my dear Bimbilla people voted for this Psycho to represent them in parliament. It’s a shame apuu,” the user wrote.
A third social media user went further, suggesting that the National Security apparatus should have intervened over the comments.
“National Security should have picked him up even before he ends this presser,” the user commented.
