President Mahama cuts sod for Airport Garden City project with over 3,000 jobs planned

President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of the Airport Garden City project in Accra, with developers, Sentuo Group, projecting more than 3,000 jobs from the development. The sod-cutting ceremony, held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, also marked the opening of the project’s sales office. Executive Chairman of Sentuo Group, Xu Ningquan, said the project would create significant employment opportunities, with the majority of the jobs targeted at Ghanaians. “Airport Garden City will provide employment for artisans, technicians, engineers, hospitality professionals and managers,” he said. Xu said the company would also introduce apprenticeship and practical training programmes to help young Ghanaians acquire employable skills. “We want to ensure that young Ghanaians do not only get jobs from this project but also acquire the skills and experience needed to build their careers,” he said. He said international specialists working on the project would be required to share their expertise with Ghanaian counterparts. “This will ensure that the knowledge and skills developed through this investment remain in Ghana,” Xu added. President Mahama, who was the keynote speaker at the ceremony, commended Sentuo Group for its continued investment in Ghana. He said projects such as Airport Garden City were important to the country’s economic development because of their potential to create jobs, stimulate economic activity and attract further investment. “Investments of this nature are essential to Ghana’s development,” President Mahama said, assuring investors of the government’s continued support for projects that create jobs and contribute to national growth. The project, described by Sentuo Group as “The Garden Above Accra”, is planned as an integrated development comprising residential facilities, a hotel and conference centre, healthcare services, shopping areas, gardens and recreational spaces. According to the developers, the project will also provide facilities capable of hosting international conferences and high-level meetings. It is expected to contribute to Accra’s appeal as a destination for business, tourism and urban living. The Minister for Works and Housing, Ahmed Ibrahim, called for greater use of vertical development to address Ghana’s housing deficit, particularly in Accra. “Building upwards will help us maximise our limited land resources and expand housing opportunities,” he said. Ahmed Ibrahim also described Ghana as an attractive investment destination and stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in increasing the country’s housing stock. Sentuo Group has also pledged to make affordability and transparency a key part of the project. The company said prospective homeowners would be given clear information on property rights, payment obligations, delivery timelines and post-handover services before committing their funds. Ghanaian creativity is expected to feature prominently in the project’s landscaping, art and interior design, while Ghanaian food and hospitality will form part of the visitor experience. Xu said Sentuo Group’s confidence in Ghana had grown through its investments in the steel, ceramics and oil refining sectors. He said the group would judge the success of Airport Garden City not only by the scale of the development but by its impact on Ghanaians. “The success of Airport Garden City will ultimately be measured by the Ghanaian jobs and local business contracts created, the skills developed and the homes successfully delivered to their owners,” he said.
