NAIMOS assures public of decisive action against galamsey in Atewa Forest

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has assured the public that concerns over illegal mining and encroachment activities within the Atewa Range Forest Reserve will not be ignored. The assurance comes amid growing concerns over the state of the forest reserve, with civil society organisations, including A Rocha Ghana, raising alarm over activities threatening the ecologically sensitive area. In a statement dated September 15, 2026, and signed by NAIMOS spokesperson Paa Kwesi Schandorf, the agency said it remains committed to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring that illegal mining activities do not undermine critical forest reserves, water bodies and the communities that depend on them. “NAIMOS remains committed to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring that illegal mining activities do not undermine critical forest reserves, water bodies and the communities that depend on them,” the Secretariat said. NAIMOS disclosed that it had already conducted reconnaissance operations within the enclave and was collaborating with relevant security and state agencies to take decisive action. It said the next phase of intervention would be guided by verified intelligence and further operational assessment to achieve maximum results. The Secretariat also commended civil society organisations, traditional authorities, communities and members of the public for their vigilance, while encouraging them to continue providing credible information to support the fight against illegal mining.
