ECG unions begin action against proposed privatisation

The National Division Senior and Junior Staff Unions of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced a series of actions against the government’s proposed privatisation of the power distribution company. In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Senior Staff Union (SSU), Christopher Apawu, and the Chairman of the Junior Staff Union (JSU), Larry Lucky Agboka, the unions directed members to begin the first phase of the action on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The unions said the National Executives Council (NEC) of the joint unions had earlier this year approved a series of actions in response to the government’s intended privatisation of ECG. “Earlier this year, the NATIONAL EXECUTIVES COUNCIL (NEC) of the joint unions approved a series of actions to be taken against government’s intended privatization of ECG,” the statement said. As part of the first phase, all members have been directed to wear red armbands to work until the unions announce their next action. “ALL MEMBERS ARE TO WEAR RED ARM BANDS TO WORK UNTIL NEXT WEEK WHEN THE NEXT ACTION IS DECLARED,” the unions directed. The unions have also instructed all branches to replace existing red flags at their operational areas with new and larger flags that clearly communicate the reason for the protest. “All branches should replace the old red flags at our operational areas with new and larger ones communicating clearly the reason for the hoisting of the flag,” the statement said. The unions, however, directed members to continue with their normal duties while wearing the red armbands. “MEMBERS ARE TO GO ABOUT THEIR NORMAL DUTIES WITH THE RED BAND ON,” the statement added. Branch executives have also been tasked with ensuring that members comply with the directives. The unions concluded the statement with the slogan, “Solidarity forever,” signalling their opposition to the proposed privatisation.
